In this article we will continue our series on Marvel heroes by talking about the Hulk, the mighty but grumpy green giant.

The Hulk, the green giant, certainly inspires more fear than the usual superhero. He has an unusual appearance, extremely muscular, and exaggerated physical strength, but also an easily irritable character.

This is no accident; the Hulk's awe-inspiring appearance and character are actually the result of careful characterisation. It would also be easy to think that the Hulk is all about strength and emotionality, but this is not the case. Read on to discover all the details of the character.

Origin and History of the Hulk

Dr Bruce Banner is a mild-mannered and reserved scientist. However, he suffers from a dissociative identity disorder after experiencing negative experiences in his childhood; this causes him to sometimes feel as if he has alter egos. One day, while he is particularly angry, he accidentally detonates a radioactive bomb that he built himself... and that is how he transforms into the Incredible Hulk.

Since then, Banner turns into the Hulk involuntarily when he feels stressed or angry. Thus the reasons for the character's creation begin to emerge. Hulk creator Stan Lee, talking about the creation of the character, said that he realised that The Thing, another superhero he created, had always been the most popular member of the Fantastic Four, and that the public would like a flawed hero to identify with.

Stan Lee was inspired by both Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Both identities, Banner and the Hulk, generally have mutual contempt for each other and a theme that often appears in the comics are Banner's attempts to prevent the Hulk from emerging.

When the Hulk emerges, he possesses extreme strength that is driven in part by his emotions and how angry he is. Throughout his adventures, the observation appears repeatedly that the angrier the Hulk gets, the stronger he becomes. The Hulk also has extraordinary stamina and has sometimes been described as being able to regenerate after suffering injuries.

Even the perhaps more modest-looking figure of Banner does not actually lack useful qualities. Banner possesses an extremely brilliant mind, whose creations rival, for example, those of Iron Man and help him get out of trouble.
